Congress ‘Lok Bhawan Chalo’ March Halted in Jammu; Top Leaders Detained

JAMMU, Feb 14: Police on Saturday foiled the Congress party’s proposed ‘Lok Bhawan Chalo’ march in Jammu and detained several senior leaders, including AICC General Secretary Syed Naseer Hussain and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Tariq Hameed Karra, officials said.

The action came after hundreds of Congress activists assembled at Maharaja Hari Singh Park and began marching towards Lok Bhawan as part of the party’s ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ campaign demanding restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and its ‘MGNREGA Bachao Sangram.’

According to Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, those detained near Jewel Chowk included Hussain, Karra, AICC General Secretary and CLP Leader G A Mir, Working President Raman Bhalla and AICC Secretary and Punjab MLA Pargat Singh.

Police intercepted the procession shortly after it started and shifted the detained leaders and activists in police vehicles to the district police lines, officials said.

Condemning the police action, Sharma said the party had planned a peaceful march to raise public welfare issues but its leaders were taken into custody before reaching the destination. (Agencies)
