President Murmu addresses joint sitting of both houses of Parliament

New Delhi, Jan 28: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said the government’s sound policies and initiatives have resulted in a rapid increase in agricultural production across the country, citing record output of foodgrains and horticulture crops.

Addressing the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on the first day of the Budget Session, the President said focused efforts were also underway to boost production in crops where the agriculture sector had lagged. She noted that national missions on edible oils, oilseeds and pulses aim to reduce imports and move the country towards self-reliance in these sectors.

President Murmu expressed confidence that India would achieve the target of 500 gigawatt renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade. Highlighting infrastructure development, she said over 70,200 kilometres of national highways have been built in the northeastern region during the last 11 years, improving connectivity to remote, hilly, tribal and border areas.

Referring to rural development, the President said a new law titled Viksit Bharat Gram has been enacted to ensure 125 days of guaranteed employment in villages. She said the legislation would help curb corruption and leakages while giving fresh momentum to rural development.

The scheme, she added, would create new opportunities for farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen. President Murmu said India has strengthened its foundation in every sector over the past decade and that 2026 marks a crucial milestone in the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat.
