Forde (Norway), Oct 3: Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinched a silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the World Championships, extending her impressive medal record at the marquee event.
The 2017 world champion and 2022 silver-medallist lifted a total of 199kg — 84kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk — after moving down from the 49kg division. Despite two failed attempts at 87kg in snatch, she bounced back strongly, successfully clearing all three lifts in clean and jerk.
Chanu’s final lift of 115kg matched her Tokyo 2021 Olympic performance, where she also won silver.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum claimed gold with a record-breaking 213kg (91kg + 122kg), setting new world marks in total and clean and jerk. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen bagged bronze with 198kg (88kg + 110kg).
Indian chief coach Vijay Sharma had said the target was to cross the 200kg mark and prepare Chanu for her return to previous 49kg-level lifts. (Agencies)
