Srinagar, Dec 27: Intense cold continued to grip the Kashmir Valley on Friday as the weather office predicted light rain and snowfall over the next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
According to MET department officials, light rain is expected in the plains of Jammu division, while snowfall is likely in the higher reaches of the Valley. The cold wave has raised concerns, especially among farmers and orchardists, as the prolonged dry spell is expected to affect both the Rani crop and apple production in 2025.
On Friday, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.3°C, Gulmarg recorded minus 6°C, and Pahalgam saw minus 8°C. In Jammu, the temperatures ranged from 8°C in Jammu city to minus 1.8°C in Banihal. Other towns like Katra and Batote recorded minimum temperatures of 7.4°C and 2.1°C, respectively.
The 40-day-long period of intense winter cold, known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ is crucial for replenishing the perennial water reservoirs in J&K, which sustain rivers, lakes, and springs during the summer. A snowless winter would lead to severe water shortages in the coming months.
The dry cold, along with lower daytime temperatures, has led to frostbite risks, especially for the elderly and children. Health experts have advised vulnerable groups to stay indoors during sub-zero temperatures and wear warm clothing to avoid hypothermia and chest diseases.
To protect themselves from the harsh winter, locals wear the traditional loose tweed overgarment, known as ‘Pheran,’ and carry the earthen firepot, or ‘Kangri,’ woven in a willow basket for instant warmth.
