Dubai, Dec 1: Jay Shah, the outgoing secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has assumed the role of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), becoming the fifth Indian to hold the prestigious position. Shah, 36, was unanimously elected by the ICC’s Board of Directors, succeeding New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who opted not to seek a third consecutive term.

Shah, who served as BCCI secretary for five years, takes over from Barclay at a critical juncture for the ICC. The upcoming challenge for Shah will include finding a viable solution to implement the ‘Hybrid Model’ for the Champions Trophy, which was originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan.

Shah follows in the footsteps of other prominent Indians who have led the ICC, including the late Jagmohan Dalmiya, politician Sharad Pawar, lawyer Shashank Manohar, and industrialist N. Srinivasan. As the son of India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, Jay Shah’s appointment marks a significant moment in the governance of global cricket.
