New Delhi, Nov. 21, 2024 – Senior bureaucrat K Sanjay Murthy was sworn in as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on Thursday, succeeding G C Murmu whose term ended on November 20, 2024. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Ganatantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Murthy took the oath of office before President Droupadi Murmu.

Murthy, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1989 batch of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has had a distinguished career spanning several decades in both state and central government roles. His long tenure in public administration includes significant stints in the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology between 2002 and 2007, as well as leadership roles in Himachal Pradesh, including as Deputy Commissioner in three districts and Managing Director of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation.

He also worked on e-governance initiatives at the National Institute for Smart Government in Hyderabad, and held key positions in the state government, overseeing Primary Education, Higher Education, Technical Education, Transport, Housing, and Urban Development during his service in Himachal Pradesh.

Murthy’s vast experience in governance, technology, and public administration makes him a strong choice for the role of CAG, which involves overseeing the public sector’s financial health and ensuring accountability in government spending.
