Rio de Janeiro, Nov 19: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a crucial meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil, reviewing the progress made in the disengagement of troops from the friction points of Demchok and Depsang along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This was the first high-level engagement between the two sides after the completion of the disengagement process last month.
Jaishankar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the discussions, stating that both sides noted the progress in the disengagement process and exchanged views on the next steps in their bilateral relationship. He also mentioned that they discussed the global situation during their talks.
The disengagement agreement, which was finalized last month, has led to a significant easing of tensions between the Indian and Chinese military forces in these areas. Troops from both sides have also resumed patrolling activities in Demchok and Depsang after a gap of nearly four and a half years.
The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by both countries to manage their border disputes and improve relations, with the G20 Summit serving as a backdrop for the diplomatic engagement. India and China have been working to resolve border tensions that had escalated in recent years, and the completion of the disengagement process marks an important step toward de-escalation.
Brazil is hosting the G20 Summit, where global leaders are discussing key international issues.
