Mehbooba demands review of termination of 74 govt employees

Srinagar: Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday has written to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, demanding an immediate review of the termination of 74 government employees dismissed under Article 311(2)(C) by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, most of whom were terminated citing “interest of the state.” Mufti proposed the establishment of a review committee to systematically reassess such cases, conducting fair and thorough reviews of each case and allowing affected employees or their families to present their side of the story. She also urged for prioritizing humanitarian assistance for families by providing swift financial relief, processing entitlements, and developing clear guidelines to prevent similar injustices in the future.
According to the reports, Mufti highlighted the case of Nazir Ahmad Wani, a naib tehsildar from Pulwama who recently died of cardiac arrest. Wani was terminated under Article 311, arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), and years of incarceration before being acquitted of all charges. Tragically, his ordeal led to serious health complications and he passed away from cardiac arrest on October 27, 2024. His grieving family, wife, and five children now face significant bureaucratic delays in securing his pension and entitlements.
Mufti emphasized the urgent need to address the dismissal of individuals like Wani, as it affects not only the individuals but also their families and creates an atmosphere of uncertainty for all government employees in Jammu and Kashmir.
