Russian Rocket Expands Space Cooperation Between Moscow and Tehran

A recent Russian rocket launch saw the successful delivery of Iranian satellites into orbit, highlighting growing collaboration between the two nations in space. On November 5th, a Soyuz rocket carrying Iranian payloads for remote sensing blasted off from Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East region.

This marked the latest in an increasing series of joint space missions between Russia and Iran. In 2022, a Russian rocket orbited an Earth observation satellite called Khayyam that was built by Tehran. Earlier this year, another Iranian satellite named Pars-1 was launched atop a Russian booster.

The satellites launched this week, named Kowsar and Hodhod, were the first carried for Iran’s private sector. Moscow and Tehran are negotiating a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement to widen cooperation in multiple domains. While details remain unclear, the Kremlin indicated an signing ceremony could happen soon.

Iran has struggled with repeated failures of its domestic Simorgh rocket used to carry satellites. Safety incidents at its spaceport have drawn international attention. However, teaming with Russia’s reliable launch services offers a capable alternative. Both nations maintain their space programs serve only peaceful purposes.

Still, the deepening partnership has political implications. Critics argue satellite launches using similar technology shorten Iran’s timeline to develop an ICBM. And accusations of Tehran supplying drones to Russia for strikes in Ukraine have strained relations with the West.

Going forward, continued successful joint space missions should strengthen strategic ties between Moscow and Tehran. While aspirations remain civilian, wider security repercussions will likely ensue from their growing high-tech collaboration.
