Google banks on rising affluence in India with launch of advanced Pixel 9 lineup

Google is targeting India’s growing premium smartphone market with the launch of its most advanced Pixel lineup yet. By bringing its entire portfolio of Pixel devices including flagship smartphones and accessories to India for the first time, the tech giant hopes to gain ground in one of the world’s largest consumer bases.

India has seen tremendous growth in demand for high-end smartphones priced over $375 in recent years. Young, affluent consumers now account for 20% of the volume and over half the value of the market. This shift stems from increased spending power, attractive financing options, and expanding online and retail networks offering premium devices.

Google is well-placed to tap into this opportunity. Its new Pixel 9 series pushes the boundaries of photography, performance and AI through powerful hardware and software features. Models ranging from 6.3 to 6.8 inches aim to satisfy different user needs, with prices starting from around $80. However, the most attention-grabbing device is the 8-inch Pixel 9 Pro Fold, providing a tablet-like experience for productivity and entertainment in a compact form factor.

To drive sales, Google is expanding availability beyond its existing online partner. Offline retail tie-ups and company-run centers will introduce Pixels to more consumers nationwide. Aftersales support is also being strengthened to provide peace of mind. Like rival Apple, local manufacturing of the Pixel 8 in India displays commitment to the market.

Only time will tell if Google can gain serious market share in India’s Android-dominated landscape. However, by bringing a premium, innovative product portfolio tailored for the future of AI and combining it with an omnichannel approach, the company aims to convince buyers and Wall Street it is committed for the long run. As more consumers upgrade to the next level, Google sees India as a goldmine of untapped potential.
