“Airbus close to finalizing site for its new helicopter assembly line in India”

European aerospace major Airbus is nearing a decision on the location for its upcoming final assembly line (FAL) to manufacture civil helicopters in India. The facility, which will be set up in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems, aims to produce Airbus’ best-selling H125 model locally by 2026.

Top company executives recently shared that eight potential sites across India are currently under consideration. While the assessment process remains ongoing, a conclusion is expected shortly. When operational, the plant will have an initial yearly capacity of 10 helicopters.

Currently, the H125 is assembled at Airbus facilities in France, the United States and Brazil. however, setting up a FAL in India provides strategically important benefits. It will make Airbus highly competitive in the growing South Asian market by enabling faster deliveries and response times for local customers.

India presents massive opportunities for helicopter use, especially as its population and economy continue expanding rapidly. While the current civil and para-public fleets are relatively low, projections show over 500 new choppers will be needed in the region, including India, over the next two decades.

By manufacturing the versatile H125 platform domestically, Airbus aims to catalyze wider helicopter adoption locally. The multi-role aircraft is well-suited for vital functions like emergency services, law enforcement and infrastructure works. Gradually easing regulations are also boosting the industry’s outlook.

Officials noted the India facility will follow global Airbus standards and provide important local benefits. It reflects the company’s long term commitment and confidence in India’s potential as a civil aviation hub. With careful site selection, the groundbreaking is slated for later this year as the project takes flight.
