Election 2024 Results: Showdown Between PM Modi and the Opposition
As the counting of votes gets underway for the 2024 general elections, the nation awaits the results with bated breath. Will Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retain power for the third consecutive term, or will the newly united opposition coalition manage to unseat them?
The highly anticipated results will start trickling in today after the Electronic Voting Machines finish tallying the millions of votes cast across the seven phases of polling over the past few months. Early trends are expected to emerge by afternoon, though final results may take longer in some constituencies.
The main contenders this time around were the BJP-led NDA and the opposition alliance comprised of regional parties like Congress, AAP, TMC and others. While the NDA focussed its campaign around PM Modi’s development agenda and national security issues, the opposition targeted the government over rising unemployment and inflation.
Key battleground states to watch out for include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal in the north and west, and Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Telangana in the south. The opposition made significant pre-poll gains in some of these regions.
However, most exit polls have predicted another majority for the NDA, estimating their seat tally to be over 300. But previous exit polls have not always been right. The opposition has rejected the projections, asserting that real results may spring a surprise.
It remains to be seen if PM Modi will indeed secure an unprecedented third straight term or if the tide has turned in the opposition’s favor. As counting of millions of paper ballots wrapped in bundles begins across the country, it is certainly going to be a nail-biting day for both sides waiting to see who emerges victorious in the mega political battle.
