Travellers bound for Vancouver finally took off from Delhi late Saturday evening after a technical issue waylaid their flight for over 21 hours. Air India flight 185 was scheduled to depart at 5:30 am but encountered mechanical problems that forced the airline to reschedule departure for 3:15 am the following day.
The delay placed significant stress on crew as their mandatory rest periods neared. An Air India spokesperson stated the holdup resulted from technical issues initially, with crew availability becoming an added complication later on.
Lengthy flight delays have unfortunately become all too common for Air India travellers in recent weeks. Just last week, the airline’s San Francisco service endured over 30 hours of postponement before departing more than a day late. Passengers grew understandably frustrated with the lack of updates or support during protracted wait times.
Aviation authorities have since issued a warning to Air India regarding failure to properly care for passengers experiencing multi-hour delays. The regulator specifically called out two international flights with inordinate postponements – one each to San Francisco from Delhi and Mumbai in late May.
While technical difficulties can arise unexpectedly, airline customers deserve clear communication and treatment with dignity when disruptions drag on. Air India must focus on better supporting flyers during delays to rebuild trust following its privatisation earlier this year. With on-time reliability an essential factor for any carrier, solutions are needed to minimize future service disruptions impacting passengers.
