As Apple explores new product categories beyond its iconic iPhone, reports indicate the tech giant may have home robots in its sights. According to sources familiar with Apple’s plans, both the hardware and AI/ML divisions are investigating robotics technologies that could underpin a mobile home device.
If realized, such a product would see Apple enter a new field dominated by companies like iRobot and its popular Roomba vacuums, which are found in over 40 million homes worldwide. Amazon also launched its Astro robot last year, a screen-mounted bot capable of following owners around the house. However, reviews cited issues with the Alexa-powered device.
Exactly what form an Apple robot may take is uncertain. Prototypes reportedly include a mobile robot to accompany users, as well as a tabletop device able to move its display using robotics. Like other home robots before it, Apple’s aim could be to place an always-available Siri-powered gadget into more living spaces.
Given iPad and iPhone sales declines, diversifying beyond its core products is important as Apple looks to continue growth. The high-profile launch of the Apple Vision Pro headset also showed potential in new categories. Over 150,000 units of the $3,500 device reportedly sold in its first weekend alone.
Only time will tell if Apple’s robot ambitions come to fruition. But with its expertise in AI, devices and household brand recognition, the company may be well-placed to succeed where others have stumbled and make home robotics its next innovative product line.
