It was hoped to be a Christmas present for fans but director Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas ended up being more of a disaster instead. Heavily relying on the performances of its leads Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, the thriller fell flat mainly due to the underwhelming acts of the two stars according to critics.
While Katrina and Vijay are immensely talented actors, their much-hyped on-screen pairing failed to sizzle on the big screen. The movie traces the journey of lonely souls Maria and Albert who find themselves tangled in a mystery after a chance encounter. However, the sparks completely missing between the duo, with critics noting they lacked any semblance of romance or chemistry that is so crucial to sell such a story.
Raghavan, known for films exploring interpersonal relationships, seemed unable to extract real emotions from his lead pair. Both appeared uncomfortable in their roles, with Katrina especially struggling with the complexities of her character. Vijay too came across as disinterested, delivering lines in a monotonic way unfitting for his character.
With the film’s climax relying heavily on making the audience believe in the love between Maria and Albert, the weak performances proved fatal. The first hour dragging as the two stars failed to engage viewers. With understated roles that demand nuanced acting, it was a mismatch of talent to the material for both Katrina and Vijay.
While fans had hoped Merry Christmas would be a refreshing change after the actors’ previous movies, it instead served only to disappoint. The highly anticipated pairing of these two stars ended up being the weakest aspect of the film according to critics. With the thriller genre requiring convincing chemistry above all else, Sriram Raghavan’s directorial ambitions were let down by the poor performances he received from his leads.
