    Global Warming Alarm!

    Date:

There is bad news for people as the WMO has just released its report on Sunday
by warning about the Earth going warmer day by day.
The global mean temperature in 2022 is estimated to be 1.15 degree Celsius above the pre-industrial (1850-1900)
average, likely making the eight years from 2015 the warmest on record, the Meteorological Organisation
said in a report. The WMO Report has come at a time when the countries are gathering for the annual COP27 UN
Climate Summit in Egypt to further discuss Climate change and its impacts. More than 120 world leaders are taking
part at the Summit which will kick off two weeks of negotiations between the countries on climate action. The
figures used in the provisional 2022 report are till the end of September this year. The final version will be issued
    next April.
WMO Report titled ‘WMO Provisional State of the Global Climate 2022' which was released at the 27th
Conference of Parties at UNFCCC has stated that the rate of sea level rise has doubled since 1993 and has risen
by nearly 10 mm since January 2020 to a new record high in 2022.
If the current anomaly continues to the end of the year, the analysis would place 2022 as either the fifth or sixth
warmest year on record (from 1850), and in each case marginally warmer than 2021. The eight years — 2015 to
2022 — are likely to be the eight warmest years on record,' the report read.
Why should we care about one or two degrees of global warming? After all, temperatures fluctuate by many
degrees every day where we live.
The temperatures we experience locally and in short periods can fluctuate significantly due to predictable,
cyclical events (night and day, summer and winter) and hard-to-predict wind and precipitation patterns. But the
global temperature mainly depends on how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and how much it
radiates back into space. The energy coming from the Sun fluctuates very little by year, while the amount of energy
radiated by Earth is closely tied to the chemical composition of the atmosphere—particularly the amount of heat-
    trapping greenhouse gases.
A one-degree global change is significant because it takes a vast amount of heat to warm all of the
oceans, the atmosphere, and the land masses by that much. In the past, a one- to two-degree drop was all it
took to plunge the Earth into the Little Ice Age. A five-degree drop was enough to bury a large part of North
America, many island nations and a vast area of coastal habitats under a towering mass of ice 20,000 years
    ago.
Every individual, thus, is born with an inescapable responsibility to keep this world safe and hospitable for our
    generations to come.
