    KVK, Reasi promotes Organic Ginger Farming

    Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-
    University of Agricultural Sciences and of (SKUAST-J) is promoting the
    organic ginger (Zinziber officinale) farming in the monkeys affected areas of Reasi distt. of
    J&K so that the income of the farmers can be enhanced. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi is
    technically educating and motivating the farmers for the commercial cultivation of organic
    ginger so that chemicals free quality ginger can be produced. The KVK scientists are guiding
    the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as cow urine, Panchgavya,
    beejamrit, jeevamrit, matka khad, fermented butter milk ,mulching etc. to use in the organic
    farming and natural farming. Farmers are continuously guided on the organic management
    of diseases and nutrients in ginger. All these practices are useful to increase the quality of
    the ginger at the minimum cost. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra
    (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal farmers of some pockets of the district face serious threats
    because of monkeys menace as monkeys damage their crops such as maize, vegetables,
    fruit crops etc. and thus directly affect their farm income. He said that KVK is stressing on
    the adoption of scientific production technologies for organic ginger production and
    emphasizing on the cluster-based approach for commercial ginger farming. According to
    him organic ginger cultivation has an immense potential in Reasi district and this crop is not
    damaged by the monkeys and wild animals. He emphasized on the promotion of sustainable
    technology among the ginger farmers of the area. According to him organic ginger are
    helpful to improve the status of human as this spice has medicinal properties. He
    added that value addition in ginger can open some new avenues of income and
    employment for the farmers of district. He narrated that organic farming and natural
    farming are helpful in the production of safe and quality food by reducing the cost of
    cultivation. Many new farmers are showing keen interest towards the production of organic
    ginger in the district.
