18-Month Marriage, ₹12 Cr Demand? SC Asks Woman to Stand on Her Feet

Mumbai, July 24: In a striking and bold observation, the Supreme Court of India advised financially qualified women to pursue self-reliance rather than demand extravagant interim maintenance from their spouses—especially in cases of brief marriages. The comment came during the hearing of a high-profile alimony case involving a well-educated woman who sought a luxurious lifestyle despite her short-lived marriage.

The woman, an IT professional with an MBA degree, had approached the court seeking a posh apartment in Mumbai, a staggering ₹12 crore as interim maintenance, and a high-end BMW car. Her marriage had lasted just 18 months. The demands sparked sharp reactions from the Bench, particularly from Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, who led the proceedings alongside Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria.

“You’re an IT person. You’ve done your MBA. You’re in demand in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad… Why don’t you work?” the CJI remarked, as reported by news agency. He underlined the importance of financial independence and self-worth, especially for highly qualified individuals. Highlighting the brevity of the marriage, he questioned the justification behind such a substantial maintenance request: “It lasted just 18 months. And you are seeking a crore a month?”

The woman defended her plea by claiming her husband, a wealthy individual, had filed for annulment on grounds of her mental health, including alleged schizophrenia. However, the Bench remained firm, underscoring that education and employability must translate into self-reliance.

Offering a resolution, the court proposed two options: either accept a property free of legal hurdles or go for a one-time lump sum settlement of ₹4 crore. “You are well educated. You should not be depending on handouts. You should earn and live with dignity,” the CJI stated, according to Bar and Bench.

The case has stirred public discourse on the ethics of spousal maintenance, financial independence, and the misuse of alimony provisions. Legal experts say the ruling may set a precedent in emphasizing dignity through employment, particularly for qualified women capable of supporting themselves.

This landmark observation is seen as a push toward gender equity not just in legal rights but also in responsibilities—urging individuals to uphold self-worth through self-reliance.
