Jammu Tawi, Mar 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress unit on Tuesday yet again staged a protest in Jammu against the BJP-led Centre over the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas, besides property tax.
Carrying placards and denouncing the “unprecedented and unjustified” hike, the Congress leaders and workers chanted slogans against the BJP government at New Plot, Jammu while demanding immediate rollback of the property tax orders.
Congress leaders also targeted the government for the steep hike in the prices of LPG cylinders and accused it of “looting” poor people by raising the fuel prices.
“The incessant hike in fuel prices is an additional burden on the common people who are at the limit of their woes owing to the Covid-19 induced lockdown for months,” they said.
They said the poor and the middle class have been severely hit by the recent hikes. “BJP's claim of providing ‘pro-people governance stands exposed as the Central government has miserably failed to address the issues affecting the general public.”
While demanding rollback of property tax, they said the government is now terrorizing the people by saying “if you won't pay tax, you will face consequences and we are on roads for terrorizing people.”
They said that the government has failed to provide basic facilities to the people but have succeeded in levying taxes only.
“At a time when the unemployment rate is increasing, instead of taking pro-people steps, they are putting more and more burden on them,” they said.
