X Assures Compliance With Indian Laws After Govt Warning on Grok AI Content

New Delhi, Jan 11:Social media platform X has accepted its mistake and assured the government that it will comply with Indian laws following a warning issued by the IT Ministry over the generation of obscene content through its AI tool Grok, government sources said on Sunday.

According to sources, around 3,500 pieces of content have been blocked and more than 600 accounts deleted in connection with the issue. X has conveyed that it will not allow obscene imagery on its platform in the future and will adhere strictly to Indian legal provisions.

The assurance came after the government found X’s earlier response to a notice on the matter to be inadequate. The IT Ministry had sought detailed information on the specific action taken against obscene content linked to Grok AI and the preventive measures put in place to avoid recurrence.

While X had earlier outlined its content moderation policies, including takedowns related to misleading posts and non-consensual sexualised images, officials said the response lacked crucial details on enforcement and future safeguards.

On January 2, the IT Ministry issued a stern warning to X over indecent and sexually explicit content generated through the misuse of AI-based services such as Grok. Subsequently, X said it takes action against illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, by removing such content, suspending accounts permanently and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.

X has also maintained that users prompting Grok to generate illegal content will face the same consequences as those uploading such material.
