India finish the second day on 151/5 in 38 overs, still trailing Australia by 318 runs.
Australia chipped away at the wickets in the final session, taking three wickets for 114 runs in 28 overs after the tea break.
Rahane has battled bravely despite a blow on his finger to be unbeaten on 29, while Bharat was on five.
Rahane and Jadeja (48) rescued India with a 71-run stand after they had slipped to 71/4 at one stage.
Rohit (15) and Gill (13) perished in the space of five deliveries, while Pujara was bowled by Green for 14. Virat Kohli also failed to carry as he was caught in the slips off Starc for the same score.
Jadeja batted positively to hit seven fours and a six, in his 51-ball 48 but he was taken at slip off Nathan Lyon.
Australia are staring at a huge first innings lead but India will hope Rahane can steer the lower order and guide them to safety on Day 3.
