What Shaped England Star Jude Bellingham’s Resilience? Former Coach Reveals Early Inspiration

When England takes on Switzerland this weekend in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, midfield dynamo Jude Bellingham will once again be key to his nation’s hopes. The 21-year-old Real Madrid man has dazzled with his all-action displays so far in the tournament. But what shaped this steeliness and resilience in Bellingham at a young age? According to his former coach at Birmingham City, it was watching his father endure fierce challenges weekend after weekend.

Paul Robinson, who coached Bellingham in the Birmingham youth ranks, recently shed light on the upbringing that helped mold the young midfielder. He recalled being immediately struck by Bellingham’s advanced football IQ from an early age. While still developing physically, his understanding of tactics and where to position himself was well ahead of his years. What’s more, Bellingham welcomed feedback on his game and worked hard to shore up any weaknesses. One area that stood out was his heading ability, something he spent extra time practicing under Robinson’s tutelage.

However, it was Bellingham’s dad Mark, a retired police officer and renowned semi-pro scorer himself, who likely instilled his son’s tough mentality. As Robinson explains, watching his father face relentless tackling up front growing up provided an example. Having seen the physicality Mark endured on weekends, Bellingham was ready for the challenges awaiting him as he rose up the ranks. Deft moves and slick passing are all well and good, but any world class midfielder must be able to withstand the pressure of elite opponents – and by all accounts, Bellingham has never shied away from the battle.

His journey has taken him from those academy fields in Birmingham to the grandest of stages with Real Madrid. But as Robinson notes, Bellingham remains proud of his roots and all he achieved for his boyhood club. If England’s hopes rest on his shoulders once more in Switzerland, there should be no doubting Bellingham’s steeliness to drive them on.
