SSC is Staff Selection Commission that conducts many examinations for recruitment to Group B and non-technical Group C posts in various departments of the Indian Government and in subordinate offices.
SSC conducts open examinations every year for posts for which large number of vacancies exist.
Graduate level posts include assistants, auditors, junior accountants, upper division clerks, divisional accountants, inspectors of income tax, central excise, sub-inspectors in central police organisations (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB) and the CBI, section officer (commercial) and section officer (audit).
Metric level posts includes stenographer grade C, stenographer grade D, and lower division clerks.
SSC conducts combined (graduate level) exams every year for various posts the qualification for which is graduation, and combined (metric level) exams for posts requiring matriculation or high school.
SSC CGL Tier-I Exam Syllabus & Pattern
Tier-I written examination is of objective multiple choice type test. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. The exam is divided into four parts. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
Tier-I exam is used to screen the candidates for appearing in Tier-II exam.

It includes questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This component may include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc.

B. General Awareness
Questions in this component are aimed at testing your general awareness of the environment around you and its application to society. Questions are designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test also includes questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy & Scientific Research.
C. Quantitative Aptitude
The questions are designed to test your ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense. The scope of the test is computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage. Ratio & Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons , Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie chart.
D. English Comprehension
Your ability to understand correct English, basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. is tested.
Eligibility
The minimum qualification required for this exam is Graduation from a recognized University. Age should be between 18 and 27 years. Age relaxation exists for categories.
Exam Pattern (From 2016)
Tier 1
There is one objective paper of 200 marks with 4 parts:
- General Intelligence & Reasoning
- General Awareness
- Quantitative Aptitude
- English Comprehension
Each part has 25 questions. In all, there are 100 questions. Each questions is of 1 mark. There is negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer. The duration of the test is 75 minutes. The mode of examination is computer based.
Tier 2
If you qualify in the Tier-I, you have to appear for Tier-II. It also contains multiple choice questions. Maths and English Papers are for everyone. Statistics paper is only for those who apply for statistics invigilator or compiler post. Each paper is of 200 marks and 2 hours duration.
Tier 3
Descriptive Paper of English or Hindi. You have the option to choose any one medium. Mode of examination is Pen and Paper based. It is of 100 marks. Duration of the paper is 60 minutes.
SSC CGL Tier-II Exam Syllabus & Pattern
Tier-II of Combined Graduate Level Examination is of objective type multiple-choice exam. This exam is conducted over a period of two days. Paper I & paper II are compulsory for all the categories of posts.
Paper III (Statistics) is only for those who apply for the post of statistical investigator Gr.II & compiler.
There is negative marking of 0.25 marks in Paper-II and 0.50 marks in Paper-I and Paper-III for each wrong answer.

Paper-II: English Language & Comprehension
Questions in this components are designed to test the candidate's understanding and knowledge of English Language and will be based on spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/detecting misspelt words, idioms & phrases, one word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage & comprehension passage.
Paper-III: Statistics
Post of Statistical Investigator Grade – II
There is difference in the eligibility and paper pattern for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr.II under Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation.

Bachelor's Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least 60% in Mathematics at 12th standard level OR Bachelor's Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.
