Vaishno Devi shrine board sets up POS machines for pilgrims

    Tawi, December 10

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has set up Point of Sale (POS) machines at all the booking counters, Bhojanalayas (restaurants) all along the track, and at the various accommodation units owned by it in Jammu and Katra to enable the pilgrims to make cashless payment following demonetisation exercise.

The board has received a total of Rs 1.90 crore of the old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations in the donation boxes during the last 30 days since demonetisation and these have been deposited in the bank.

This was informed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the shrine board to Governor NN Vohra, who is the Chairman of the board, after the latter sought a report from the CEO about the difficulties caused to the pilgrims because of the replacement of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and how the same were being dealt with.

In his report, the CEO informed that as the daily collections were deposited in the bank the very next day, on November 8 there was only one day's donation amount which was pending for deposit in the shrine board bank account.

“The board also provided photocopy facilities to the pilgrims at Niharika Complex and Bhawan for copying of forms and identity cards which was required to be done by the pilgrims for exchanging their old currency notes from the local bank branches,” he said, adding that “all the supervisory officers were instructed not to accept the old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations at any of the Bhojanalayas, booking counters, sales and donation counters and at the board's various accommodation units.

He said the full record of the currency notes being received was being maintained on daily basis. “As a measure of abundant caution, the old notes are being deposited in the board's bank account only after scrutiny and prior approval of the board's Chief Accounts Officer,” the CEO said, adding that the old currency notes were still being found in the donation boxes installed at various locations, but their number has reduced considerably.

The board has issued an advisory to pilgrims in the shape of a pamphlet and displayed at different locations along the track as well as at Niharika, Adhkuwari, Bhawan and at each of the accommodation and other units advising them not to put old currency notes in the donation boxes.

Meanwhile, the Governor also visited Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and reviewed the arrangements for the pilgrims and status of implementation of major development works, particularly the completion of the Tarakote Marg.

Guard interests of state, CM tells people

    Srinagar, December 10

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asked the people to rise and guard the interests of the state. She said the residents of J&K had to show the way to peace, development and prosperity.

Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of the corporate office of the J&K Cable Car Corporation here this afternoon, the CM said the people of the state have to create an atmosphere which could lead to friendship, amity and goodwill between the two neighbouring countries.

“It is only a peaceful atmosphere which can pave the way for the betterment of the relations, resolution of issues and frequent interactions across the borders,” she was quoted by the government spokesman as having said.

The CM said she had plans of making a large park at Tattoo Ground and many other parks in the city to decongest it and provide a recreational space to its residents. She, however, regretted that the government could not get much time this year to translate these plans into concrete actions. — TNS
