Jammu, Mar 20: The Jammu and Kashmir government has disclosed that the current unemployment rate in the Union Territory stands at 6.1% for individuals aged 15 years and above in the year 2023-24, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
In response to a question from MLA Tanvir Sadiq, the government further disclosed that as of January 2025, a total of 3,70,811 unemployed youth have voluntarily registered on the employment portal.
The concerned minister highlighted various self-employment schemes like Mumkin, Tejaswani, Mission Youth, PMEGP, and REGP, aimed at generating employment opportunities. Since 2021, these initiatives have led to the creation of approximately 9.58 lakh self-employment opportunities, with 1.36 lakh opportunities generated in the current fiscal year (2024-25).
In addition, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MG NREGA), the government has generated 3.01 crore person-days of employment, benefiting 8.07 lakh households.
To foster further entrepreneurship and skill development, the government has launched Mission YUVA, an initiative aimed at establishing 1.35 lakh entrepreneurship units and creating employment for 4.5 lakh youth in Jammu and Kashmir. The department is also actively promoting skill development through specialized training programs and conducting regular job fairs to connect job seekers with employers in the private sector.
