NEW DELHI, Jan 6: A group of students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) raised controversial slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah inside the campus on Monday night, a day after the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
According to a purported video of the protest, slogans condemning the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were raised during the demonstration, triggering a political and public debate.
JNU Students’ Union president Aditi Mishra said the protest was part of an annual observance to condemn the violence that occurred on the campus on January 5, 2020. “All of the slogans raised in the protest were ideological and did not attack anyone personally. They were not directed towards anyone,” Mishra told news agency.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said no complaint has been received so far in connection with the slogans raised during the protest.
Violence had erupted at JNU on January 5, 2020, when a mob of masked men stormed the campus and attacked students in three hostels. The attackers allegedly used sticks, stones and iron rods, damaging property and assaulting inmates.
At least 28 people, including then JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos prevailed on the campus for nearly two hours.
The Delhi Police had faced sharp criticism for allegedly failing to act during the violence and for later naming student union leaders, including Ghosh, in two FIRs related to vandalism on the campus. (Agencies)
