Terrorists attack Doordarshan Tower, decamp with five rifles

Anantnag: Terrorists fled with at least five guns taken from security men guarding a Low Power Transmitter station of public service broadcaster Doordarshan in Dalvash village in Dooru, Anantnag district of and . Terrorists overpowered the security guards and snatched the weapons before fleeing.

 

According to police sources, one Insas and carbine rifle each, and three self-loading rifles have been looted from the security guards. The tower police guards were taken into custody. Security forces have been put on an alert in entire south Kashmir to track down the terrorists.

 

“They took away five service rifles, and a hunt has been launched to nab the terrorists involved in this incident,” a top police official said.

 

There have been several incidents of rifle-snatching in the last month and almost all incidents have been reported from the four districts of south Kashmir. Majority of the incidents have been reported from Kulgam district.

 

Recently, terrorists snatched five service rifles from guards in Damhal Hanji Pora area of Kulgam district.

 

Another weapon-snatching bid was foiled in neighbouring Pulwama where policemen opened fire when terrorists appeared at a picket meant to guard the minority community members.

 

Sources said terrorists fired at the guard, which was retaliated and they fled. No loss of life has been reported.

 

Sources in Intelligence Bureau sent a high-alert to patrolling troops, particularly Jammu and Kashmir police, asking them to be vigilant as militants might try to overpower and disarm them. Last year, terrorists had carried out five point-blank attacks in south Kashmir and snatched weapons from the policemen.

 

According to police, this year Lashkar-e-Toiba has recruited many local's youths from Kashmir valley, and they are in need of weapons. Around 250 active militants are present in Kashmir.
