Karur (Tamil Nadu), Sept 28: Thirty-nine people lost their lives in the Karur stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s rally on September 27, while 67 injured persons remain under treatment at the Government Hospital here, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary P. Senthil Kumar said on Sunday.
The deceased included 17 women, 13 men, 4 boys, and 5 girls. Post-mortems have been completed for 30 victims, and the bodies have been handed over to their families. Efforts were underway to hand over the remaining bodies, with one female victim yet to be identified, Dindigul District Collector S. Saravanan said.
Among those admitted, two remain in critical condition, while the rest are stable. One patient was shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Madurai, for advanced care. Another 26 people were treated as outpatients and discharged.
Health Secretary Senthil Kumar said nearly 200 doctors were working at Karur Government Hospital, supported by an additional 149 doctors, nurses, and forensic experts mobilised from nearby facilities to handle the large number of deaths and post-mortems. “All the bodies are being shifted to their doorsteps,” he added.
Director of Medical Education Dr. Suganthi Rajakumari confirmed that oxygen and medicines were available in adequate supply across government hospitals and that all patients were receiving the best possible treatment.
Authorities confirmed that 38 bodies had been identified, and only one remained unidentified. The final identification and post-mortem process was underway, Saravanan said.
The stampede on Saturday evening left the region in shock, with state officials closely monitoring the situation and extending medical and logistical support to the affected families. (Agencies)
