Suzuki Bets Big on Small Batteries and Lightweight Cars for the Future
Suzuki has outlined ambitious plans to minimize energy consumption and emissions through advanced technologies over the next ten years. The automaker revealed it will focus on developing electric vehicles which combine compact yet efficient electric powertrains with smaller, lighter batteries.
According to Suzuki, smaller cars require less material to build, and therefore consume less energy to manufacture. By designing vehicles that weigh less through lightweight components and energy-saving features, the size and capacity of the battery can also be reduced. This helps curb the use of rare earth metals which are energy-intensive to mine and process.
The company has achieved success in building lightweight vehicles for the Indian market through its expertise in efficient engineering. On average, a Suzuki car in India weighs nearly 200 kilograms less than the industry standard, resulting in lower energy usage for production and driving. Going forward, Suzuki will evolve body structures and platforms to squeeze out even more weight without compromising safety.
In addition to vehicles, Suzuki is committed to minimizing energy consumption across its entire manufacturing process. It will transition to a circular business model where resources are reused and recycled to their maximum potential. This sustainable approach aims to curb the linear consumption of raw materials and optimize energy efficiency throughout the product lifecycle.
Through its dedication to compact electric drivetrains and batteries, Suzuki is spearheading the shift towards greener mobility solutions tailored for diverse consumer needs. With a focus on lightweight design and a circular economy, the company is demonstrating long-term vision and bold steps to address pressing environmental challenges.
