The Supreme Court recently took steps to alleviate the ongoing blockade at the Shambhu border connecting Punjab and Haryana. The top court directed the Director Generals of Police of the two states to meet within a week along with Senior Superintendents of Police from Patiala and Ambala districts.
They were asked to explore the possibility of partially reopening the border by ensuring passage of essential transport like ambulances and vehicles carrying senior citizens, women, students and locals from nearby areas. If both states arrive at an acceptable solution through discussions, the court said there was no need to wait for further orders.
Meanwhile, Punjab agreed to persuade protesting farmers encamped at the site for months to remove tractors parked on the highway. The six-lane road was blocked due to the ongoing agitation in support of various demands.
Both states also submitted names of neutral persons for a proposed expert committee to commence talks with farmers and resolve their concerns amicably. Appreciating cooperative efforts, the Supreme Court will pass detailed orders next week on forming the panel and defining its responsibilities.
While ensuring citizens’ right to protest, the top court is making continuous efforts to end the logjam at Shambhu border through negotiations in a peaceful, democratic manner.
