Sadly the world of crime is changing very fast with cyber threats looming large and criminals with sound technical background are moving ahead of the cops making it imperative for the men in Khaki and other concerned agencies to become tech-savvy and remain two steps ahead of the aforesaid entities otherwise prevention of cyber crimes shall not be possible.
In this context, reportedly the General Administration Department (GAD) has enjoined upon all the Administrative Departments to conduct the security audit of their websites within a period of one month in order to protect the Government entities against cyber threats. This no doubt is a promising step in curbing the cyber crimes especially related to government functioning but the direction issued in this regard to ensure security audit of government websites/applications periodically, at least once a year, in compliance with security policy, guidelines, and procedures, laid down by the CERT-In and Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India not seems to be adequate because the need of the time is to think out of the box and remain technically more advanced so that any attempt by the cyber criminals should be nipped in the bud.
Reports have averred that still a large number of websites hosted on State Data Centre by different departments are un-audited resulting in increased risk of cyber attacks, which should not be the case as these websites and applications hold big stakes of the government.
It is however praiseworthy that the concerned quarters have taken things seriously and have ordered security audit of departmental websites/applications through CERT-In empanelled agencies within a period of one month to protect the Government entities against cyber threats. The thumb rule in this case should be to always remain ahead of entities posing threat to the cyber world connected with J&K Government's functioning.
As far as cops are concerned they should also follow the same principle of staying ahead of cyber criminals in containing cyber crimes which have become a new norm in the cyber world. Of course it is a war between those who misuse technology and the ones who make good use of technology to keep off the entities relying on misdemeanors to have undue advantage.
