    Safety Of Citizens Paramount

The present scenario in the Middle East on account of geopolitical volatility and evolving security challenges should be taken seriously by the Indian government back home to take necessary steps for the safety of citizens in case the country faces a similar crisis.

There is no doubt that the government has constructed a good number of bunkers for people living along the borders in J&K, although the condition of many is reportedly not up to the mark. But considering the modern ways of warfare especially after experiencing last year’s military conflict with Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack in April 2025, which saw many drones enter the country’s territory and navigate deep inside, with some causing damage also, it becomes imperative for the government to get ready with infrastructure that could save the civilians during the odd times.

In bordering states including J&K, it is necessary for the incumbent dispensation to come up with a comprehensive strategy to protect civilian lives. Creating well-constructed community bunkers with all facilities at various places in cities, rural areas and even far flung areas is a need of the hour because this is something which could not be constructed overnight rather a long term plan is imperative to make a robust planning to safeguard the people in case of any disruption of peace involving hostile nations.

Taking into account the nuclear capabilities of India’s neighbours and the escalation of military conflicts worldwide, pondering over the issue and initiating concrete measures to create failsafe edifice for the people during emergencies is not at all a bad idea.

In this regard, people sitting at the helm should learn valuable lessons from countries like Israel because despite being a small country on the world map, the successive governments have invested significantly in civil defence infrastructure, constructing hundreds of public bomb shelters and mandating reinforced safe rooms in residential buildings. The utility of such an edifice has been seen in recent attacks on Israel by Iran, whereby its citizens remained safe despite buildings transforming into rubble by the pounding of bombs and missiles.

Such a model gives concrete solutions to save countless lives and instill a sense of security among the people at the time of crisis. India is also sitting on a ticking bomb because both Pakistan and China are unpredictable and therefore emulating the Israeli model of public safety has become the need of the hour and the people at the helm should start mulling over the issue and must give a nod to make the citizenry safe at crucial times like wars and ceasefire violations.

Taking a cue from Israel’s model and adapting it to local conditions has become utmost necessary as preparedness is the strongest shield a nation can offer to its people.
