Rain, snow expected tomorrow in J&K, ‘Orange-alert’

The Meteorological Department has predicted a three-day period of moderate rain and snow beginning Thursday in the Union territories of Jammu and and Ladakh, MeT department officials said. According to a statement issued on Tuesday night by Earth Science, India Meteorology Centre, Srinagar, moderate rain and snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir and at scattered places of Ladakh region from March 5 to 7.The department said light rain and snow would commence at a few places of Kashmir division on the morning of March 5 and thereafter increase in intensity and distribution with its main activity on March 6 and 7.The statement further reads that there is a possibility of thunderstorm, hail and gusty winds blowing at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour in the plains of Jammu division and few places of Kashmir division during the period.
The IMD has issued the second highest warning —orange alert signifying ‘be prepared'—for the Northwest for Friday, March 6.
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected in , Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh between March 5 (Thursday) and March 7 (Saturday), according to India's official forecaster.
On March 6, subdivisions Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan; Pradesh and Uttarakhand will experience rain/snowfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall, thunderstorm, lightning and hail. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh and Western UP will see rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning, hail and gusty wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph on the day.
The active wet spell over Northwest and adjoining Central India will last till March 7.
Along with a western disturbance high moisture feed will also take place over Northwest India from Arabian Sea on March 5 and 6.
Under its influence widespread rainfall/snowfall is expected over Western Himalayan region between March 5 and March 7. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is also expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in this period, says the IMD.
Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, hail and gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) is very likely to occur at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and at a few places over Punjab and Haryana on March 5 and 6.
Heavy rain/snowfall can also be expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during this period.
Due to confluence between westerly winds associated with the Western Disturbance and moist low level easterly wind from Arabian Sea moderate, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorm accompanied with lightning/hail is also expected over Central India and adjoining East India — Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Northeastern states—in this period.
