The Punjab Cabinet has announced a three-day session of the state Legislative Assembly to take place from September 2nd to 4th. Key issues on the agenda will be addressed during this time.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann approved summoning the seventh session of the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha on these dates. The meeting will open with customary obituary references on the 2nd, followed by discussions on matters of public importance.
However, proposed changes to election rules for local bodies have been postponed for further review. Amendments seeking to prohibit panchayat candidates from using political party symbols were deferred after Cabinet members felt this should only apply to panchayat races, not block or district levels.
Other important decisions made include designating the State Executive Committee to directly release disaster relief over ₹1 crore. Motor vehicle tax will be reduced for tourist vehicles to boost tourism. An additional luxury tax and ‘Green Tax' on older vehicles were approved to generate revenue and reduce pollution.
Key legislations like the Punjab Fire Safety Bill 2024 and policies on youth services, sports, agroforestry and disability education were also given nod. This session aims to productively address outstanding issues through democratic debate in the coming month.
