PDP sidelined during expansion of union ministry

Tawi, July 6: Two factors seem to be responsible for sidelining of PDP from being inducted in the council of ministers, which was expanded on Tuesday.

Though 19 new faces have found berth in the council of ministers but PDP MPs did not find any place in the cabinet.

One factor was that since Jammu and was not poll bound there was no compulsion for Modi to induct one of the two PDP MPs in the cabinet. In the previous Lok Sabha election the PDP had three members in the Lok Sabha but after Mehbooba Mufti got elected to the Assembly following her elevation to the post of Chief Minister there are only two MPs, one is Muzaffar Hussain Baig and the other is Abdul Hameed Karra.

Political observers say that Modi opted for MPs from poll bound states for induction in the cabinet.

Secondly, PDP MPs besides the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, seem to have been least interested in getting berth in the union council of ministers for the two MPs.  Mehbooba knew it well that in case Modi inducted one of the two MPs it would have been treated as a sell out
before the BJP.

The PDP's alliance with the BJP had already earned displeasure of voters in the Kashmir valley and hence the PDP leadership was not in favour of being held responsible for added sell out to BJP by accepting a berth in the union council of ministers.

For Modi there was no compulsion from the PDP for giving one of the two MPs berth in the cabinet hence Modi did not want to sacrifice one cabinet seat for the poll bound states, including Utter Pradesh, for accommodating PDP. Had the PDP been interested in a berth in the council of ministers Modi could have given a a place for one of the three MPs the place in the cabinet when late Mufti Sayeed forged an alliance with the BJP over a year
