India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey believes the team is developing a robust pool of fast bowlers who are not far away from Test selection, after getting valuable exposure in white-ball cricket.
Mhambrey’s successful stint with the Indian team came to an end with their T20 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean last year. In a conversation with this publication, he reflected on overseeing the transition of the pace attack while maintaining strong performances across formats.
The former coach acknowledged India was entering a changing phase with Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav’s careers winding down. However, he was confident about the young quicks coming through the pipeline like Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. Both have excelled in shorter formats on the international stage.
Mhambrey feels their exposure against top oppositions has readied them for the tougher Tests arena. With more seasoning in domestic red-ball cricket, some of these bowlers could soon break into the Test side as well. Jasprit Bumrah’s recurring injuries also presented opportunities to nurture new talents like Mohammed Siraj.
The coach was pleased with Siraj’s rapid progress across white and red ball cricket in challenging overseas conditions. Planning carefully using matchups and extensive data analysis, India had great success with selections like three specialist spinners in their T20 World Cup winning XI.
Umran Malik’s searing pace excited fans but Mhambrey stressed the need to add control through Ranji cricket. Overall, it was a fulfilling tenure for Mhambrey in developing a formidable new-age pace attack, which remains the envy of many on the global stage. With a talented cluster of bowlers in the ranks, India’s fast bowling resources look bright for the coming years.
