The Indian cricket team found themselves in a tense moment during the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa, with the Proteas requiring 30 runs off the final 30 balls to win the coveted title. However, according to captain Rohit Sharma, wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant came up with an ingenious tactic to disrupt the opponent’s momentum at a crucial juncture.
In a recent interview, Sharma revealed that Pant feigned a knee injury, prompting the physio to attend to him on the field and slowing the game’s pace. With South Africa charging along at a quick rate, the brief stoppage was crucial to break their rhythm. Pant has now opened up about the pivotal incident, confirming Sharma’s account.
Speaking to the media, Pant stated that as the game was evenly poised with minimal runs needed, he spotted a chance to seize the initiative. He deliberately asked the physio to take his time while icing and taping his supposedly injured knee. With the Proteas batter waiting impatiently, those valuable few minutes could make all the difference.
Pant was aware that sometimes unconventional methods are necessary in high-pressure finals. Pleased with the outcome, he suggested it may have been a factor in India eventually lifting the trophy. Earlier, Sharma also credited Pant’s quick thinking for shifting the momentum in their favor during a nail-biting finish.
The dramatic closing stages highlighted Pant’s tactical acumen under stress. While not always a guaranteed tactic, on the biggest stage it contributed to India conquering the 2024 T20 World Cup.
