Omar Flags Indo-US Trade Deal Concerns, Says Agriculture May Be Hit

Srinagar, Feb 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday voiced serious concerns over the potential impact of a proposed Indo-US trade deal on the agriculture sector, cautioning that local farmers may face stiff competition if high-value American products enter the domestic market.

Speaking at the SKUAST Gon’gul festival, Abdullah said he does not see clear benefits for farmers in such an arrangement and warned that the sector could come under pressure unless productivity and quality standards are significantly enhanced. “If tomorrow US products enter the market, we must be prepared,” he said, stressing the need to boost both output and quality to remain competitive.

The Chief Minister noted that the current Budget has placed special emphasis on strengthening the rural economy, with agriculture at the core of policy focus. He highlighted the key role of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in advancing research, innovation and farmer support systems to meet emerging challenges.

Referring to regional developments, Abdullah underscored the importance of neighbourhood stability for sustained economic growth. He expressed hope for improved ties with Bangladesh following free and fair elections there, stating that a stable Bangladesh would serve the broader interests of the region. [KNT]
