Srinagar, Feb 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday emphasized that technology-driven and organic farming solutions are essential to strengthen the rural economy of Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the inauguration of the 11th AgriTech Mela, GON’GUL-2026, at the Shalimar campus of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, he said the government is making all efforts to improve rural livelihoods.
“The government has placed special focus on agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, floriculture, and dairy in the recent budget,” CM Omar said, highlighting that progressive farmers, scientists, and research institutions are transforming the agrarian landscape through innovation and government-backed programs.
He stressed that Jammu and Kashmir must improve both the quality and quantity of its agricultural produce to compete globally. “Value addition, branding, and stronger market linkages are crucial to ensure better returns for farmers,” he added.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of GON’GUL as a platform for farmers to interact with experts, explore new technologies, and access emerging market opportunities. The theme for this year, “NextGen Agriculture: My Produce–My Price,” focuses on cutting-edge innovations, sustainable practices, and entrepreneurship in the agri-sector.
During the mela, CM Omar inspected over 100 stalls showcasing innovative tools, machinery, and technologies from start-ups, enterprises, and student-led projects. He lauded universities for nurturing young agri-entrepreneurs and advancing research-driven solutions tailored to local needs.
Addressing challenges from duty-free imports of agricultural produce, he urged local growers to adopt modern storage solutions and quality standards to remain competitive. The establishment of Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage facilities, he noted, has helped fruit growers maintain quality and extend shelf life for domestic and international markets.
Referring to horticulture products such as apples, walnuts, and almonds, CM Omar said Jammu and Kashmir has significant potential but must focus on grading, packaging, and branding to secure better prices. He reiterated that technology-driven and organic farming practices are necessary to boost rural incomes and ensure sustainability.
The inaugural session was attended by ministers Sakina Itoo and Javaid Ahmad Dar, along with faculty members, scientists, and hundreds of farmers and agri-entrepreneurs from across Kashmir.
