NIA to prosecute Azhar, 3 others in Pathankot attack

New Delhi, November 28: Union Home Ministry has given its sanction to prosecute Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar and three others for the January's terrorist strike on a military installation in Pathankot.

The Investigation Agency will name Azhar, his brother Rauf Asghar, Qashif Jan and Shaid Latif — two handlers of four terrorists who struck a base of the Indian Air Force in Pathankot — in its charge sheet, official sources said.

Sources said the new charge sheet would help 's case to have the United Nations declare Azhar a global terrorist. The charge sheet will name only four terrorists — Nasir Hussain from Vehari in Pakistan's ; Hafiz Abu Bakar from Punjab's Gujranwala; Sindh's Sanghar Umar Farooq; and Abdul Qayum from Sindh's Sukkur— involved in the attack as opposed to six claimed by the National Security Guards.

The NIA had also investigated phone numbers; a conversation that a militant had minutes before the attack; and Rauf's video message released on a Jaish-affiliated website claiming the attack.

The charge sheet will have on record evidence that linked footprints of an attacker secured from Gurdapsur's Bamiyal — from where the militants crossed over into India — and DNA samples from a soft drink can in a car the militants hijacked. The car belonged to Punjab Superintendent of Police Salwinder Singh.

The gunmen struck the military base on January 2 in a predawn strike. Eight military men and all four gunmen were killed at the end of a 48-hour gun battle.

A joint investigation team had visited the air base to investigate the attack, but claimed that India refused to share much evidence and did not allow it to question the personnel involved in the militant strike.

China, an ally of Pakistan, has so far frustrated India's attempts to have Azhar declared a global terrorist. — PTI
