A Revamp for the World Test Championship Final?
Legendary Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has proposed an interesting idea to change the format of the highly anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) final. In a recent interview, Lyon suggested hosting the summit clash over a three-match series instead of the current one-off final.
As per the veteran spinner's idea, one Test could be held in England, another in India, and the final match in Australia. This would allow teams to experience different conditions and give them a chance to bounce back even if they lose one game.
The upcoming 2025 WTC final, like the previous two editions in 2021 and 2023, is scheduled to take place at London's iconic Lord's Cricket Ground. However, Lyon brings up a fair point about teams only getting used to one set of conditions in a winner-takes-all final.
Playing one Test each in the three top Test nations would present a proper test of skills across varied pitches and climates. It could thus determine the true best Test team in a more compelling fashion over multiple matches.
Australia are the defending WTC champions, having defeated India in the 2023 final in England. Both teams currently occupy the top two spots on the standings table and will be strong contenders for the 2025 showpiece event as well. With crucial series lined up later this year, the race to qualify for the final is well and truly on.
