NAGPUR, Apr 30: A high-security alert was sounded across Nagpur after an anonymous letter claimed that radioactive material had been planted at key locations, including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters and a BJP office, officials said on Thursday.
Police said the letter, received on April 27 at the office of Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal, warned that Caesium-137 had been placed at multiple sites across the city.
Multiple teams, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Anti-Terrorism Squad, and atomic energy experts, conducted extensive searches at all locations mentioned. However, no traces of radioactive material have been found so far.
Police suspect the threat to be a hoax but said the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. A case has been registered at Sadar police station, and investigations are underway to trace the origin of the letter, purportedly sent by a group calling itself ‘DSS’.
The letter specifically mentioned the RSS headquarters, Smriti Mandir, and a BJP office in Ganeshpeth, along with claims targeting Metro trains and city bus services.
Security has been intensified across sensitive locations, with heightened surveillance already in place at the RSS headquarters. Officials said further action will depend on findings as the probe progresses.
