Mughal road to be developed as alternate NH

SRINAGAR, JUNE 29: Saying that better road connectivity is a sign of development, Minister for Roads and Buildings, Abdul Rehman Veeri today said that Government has initiated a well knit road network programme across the state.

The Minister was responding to issues raised by various Members during the discussion held in Upper House today to discuss the activities of R&B department.

The Minister said that the Government would vigorously take up the issue to construct Mughal Road as an alternative Highway to connect Valley with Jammu and rest of the Country, saying that Union Government has to consider it as an alternate National Highway. He said the work on National Highway has been going on for some time and will take some time for its execution. He said that Mughal Road is the best option and an alternative road to connect Jammu through Bafliaz Poonch, saying that construction of tunnel on Shopian-Poonch stretch should be taken seriously to make it all road.

The Minister said that besides getting approval for construction of tunnel at Zojila on Srinagar-Kargil road, the Government has also taken up the construction of tunnel at Sinthan top on Anantnag-Kishtwar road.

The Minister said that people need to understand that unlike other states of the Country like Gujarat and Punjab, J&K lacks resources.

Veeri said that despite the huge losses caused to scores of roads and bridges by September 2014 floods, the State has macadamized 1800 kms road and restored 87 bridges so far.

The Minister said that authorities have been asked to acquire minimum land that would not only pave way for completion of the projects in shortest possible time but would also save the acquisition charges.

Taking part in the discussion, MLC Gulam Nabi Monga demanded completion of Jatti Bridge over River Jehlum at Baramulla. He said the pace of construction work on the vital bridge is going on snail's pace and needs to be accelerated. He also called for construction of four-laning of Narwaw-Uri road which has already been announced by the late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Vibod Gupta demanded renovation of Thanamandi to Baffliaz stretch of Mughal Road. He said that in Rajouri people did not get Land compensation from last 20 years and also demanded blacktopping of roads in Rajouri district.

Naresh Gupta demanded double shift work on Chenab Valley Roads because this is highly and accidental prone area in the state. He said that performance of Engineers should be reviewed after every six months.

Dr. Bashir Ahmad Shah (Veeri) demanded construction of roads pending under PMGSY and Central Road Fund (CRF).

Jugal Kishore Sharma urged Government to complete the construction work of a bridge, pending for last 10 years in Reasi town. He also demanded that double shift work should be made compulsory in the state.

Ramesh Arora said that penalty clause should also be incorporated in e-tendering and urged for introduction of modern in construction of roads.

Sham Lal Bhagat demanded completion of pending road projects in Chenab Valley.

Surinder Choudhary asked for early completion of under execution roads and bridges in Sunderbani.

Sofi Yousuf demanded widening of Bejbehara-Pahalgam road on priority basis. He said that honorarium should be released to casual labourers before Eid festival.

Zaffar Iqbal Manhas said that macadamization of roads should be done in Kandi areas on priority basis in Shopian District. He also demanded  early completion of construction work on Shadab Karewa link road and a bridge in Kellar.

Saif-u-Din Bhat demanded time bound completion of road projects undertaken by JKPCC. He also called for introduction of Europe based technology for the execution of new road and bridge projects.

Vikramaditya demanded construction of roads and bridges on Regional Circuit in Sudh Mahadev.

Master Noor Hussain demanded construction of link roads in Gujjar areas of  Samba district.

Firdous Ahmad Tak termed Batote-Kishtwar Highway as accidental prone and demanded its immediate renovation. He also demanded early construction of Vailoo tunnel on  Anantnag-Sinthan road.

Dr. Shehnaaz Ganai demanded early start of work on Poonch-Uri road and construction of tunnel on Mugal Road. She also said that steps should be taken to strengthen Mechanical Division for snow clearance in Hilly areas.
