Modi calls Bengal Turnout Mandate for Change

Bengal records 91.78 pc voting in Phase 1

Krishnanagar/Mathurapur (WB): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the massive voter turnout in the first phase of West Bengal Assembly elections, calling it an “overwhelming mandate for change.” Polling across 152 constituencies witnessed an impressive 91.78% turnout, one of the highest in the state’s electoral history.

Addressing rallies in Krishnanagar and Mathurapur, Modi congratulated voters for their enthusiastic participation despite the heat, and praised the Election Commission for maintaining minimal violence. He noted that such peaceful polling was rare in the state over the past five decades.

The Prime Minister asserted that the high turnout reflected a shift from fear to trust, signalling people’s desire to move away from the ruling TMC government. He said the results on May 4 would mark the end of what he termed the “syndicate system” and misgovernance in the state.

Modi claimed that historically, higher voter participation has benefited the BJP, expressing confidence of a decisive mandate. He also took a dig at the ruling party, linking public anger to issues like corruption, lawlessness, and alleged nexus with criminal elements.

Despite heavy deployment of over 2,400 companies of central forces across more than 44,000 polling booths, sporadic incidents of violence were reported from some areas.

Touching upon key issues, Modi spoke about citizenship for refugees, promising to expedite the process under the Citizenship Amendment Act after elections. He also targeted the state government over alleged support to infiltrators and assured stricter border control measures.

Focusing on women’s safety, the Prime Minister cited rising crime cases and promised strong action against offenders. He announced several welfare measures, including financial assistance for women and students, enhanced security infrastructure, and increased recruitment of women in police forces.

Modi further highlighted BJP’s commitment to women’s empowerment through reservation in legislatures and criticised opposition parties for opposing the move.

Later, he visited the Ramakrishna Mission headquarters at Belur Math, offered prayers, and concluded the day with a roadshow in Howrah.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar termed the turnout the highest since Independence. Polling for the second phase is scheduled for April 29, with counting on May 4.
