Militant killed, 2 jawans injured in Shopian gunfight

Srinagar, November 7

A militant was killed and two soldiers were injured in a gunfight in south 's Shopian district during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

Police said that gunfight started at Wangam Shopian, nearly 60 kms from here, at around 2 am when police and Army launched an operation after an input about the presence of militants in the area. As the area was being cordoned, hiding militants opened fire triggering a gunfight.

“In the gunfight, one militant was killed and two soldiers were injured,” a police officer said. The condition of the injured jawans is stated to be stable. An AK rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the encounter site.

The slain militant has been identified as Saddam Hussain Mir, who had taken up arms during the current unrest. Saddam is the second new militant recruit  who was killed in a gunfight in past two days in Shopian. On Saturday, Waseem Ahmed Khanday was killed in a gunfight Doubjan Shopian.

At least 43 youth have joined militancy during the nearly four-month-long unrest that was triggered by the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani.
