MHA issues nationwide alert; Sinha calls for heightened vigil in J&K

Reviews law & order situation; appeals for calm and communal harmony

Jammu/Srinagar, Mar 3: A day after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a nationwide security alert to all States and Union Territories in view of the prevailing geopolitical situation, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday directed officials to maintain heightened vigil and ensure public peace.

Chairing back-to-back high-level review meetings in Srinagar, the Lieutenant Governor asked security and civil administration officers to remain on alert and take all necessary measures to maintain law and order.

“Preserving peace and sustaining the progress of society is a shared responsibility that rests equally upon each one of us,” Sinha said, appealing to citizens and community leaders to uphold harmony and contribute to an atmosphere of calm and goodwill.

Earlier in the day, the Lieutenant Governor held in-depth deliberations on the prevailing security scenario at the Lok Bhavan with top security officials. The meeting was attended by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C), Northern Command, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma; Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat; GoC 15 Corps Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava; and Major General Balbir Singh, MGGS, Northern Command.

An official spokesperson said the discussions focused on the emerging situation in the Union Territory in the wake of recent developments in West Asia.

Later, Sinha chaired another meeting at the Police Control Room, Kashmir, to review the law and order situation. Senior police and civil administration officials, including DGP Nalin Prabhat, Special DG (Coordination) SJM Gillani, ADGP Armed Anand Jain, ADGP CID Nitish Kumar, IGP Kashmir VK Birdi, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, DIG CKR Rajiv Pandey and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo, were present.

After the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor shared on X that officers had been directed to remain on heightened alert and ensure public peace and tranquillity. He reiterated his appeal to citizens and community leaders to maintain harmony.

The review meetings come amid protests in parts of Kashmir and Jammu following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in joint strikes. For the past few days, several areas in Kashmir have remained under precautionary restrictions.

In its advisory, the MHA had stated that intelligence inputs suggested extremist groups might attempt to exploit the prevailing tensions to foment unrest or carry out disruptive activities. The ministry directed Directors General of Police across the country to keep quick response teams operational and emphasised close monitoring of social media platforms to curb the spread of inflammatory content, misinformation and rumours that could disturb communal harmony.
