Srinagar, Aug 30: Renowned meteorologist Sonam Lotus on Saturday cautioned that the ongoing monsoon phase—July to mid-September—remains the most dangerous period of the year, often associated with cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides.
Speaking to news agency, Lotus forecast heavy rainfall between August 31 and September 3 in parts of South Kashmir, Chenab Valley, and Jammu division, particularly during morning hours.
He explained that continuous rainfall for 48 hours saturates the soil, increasing the risk of floods, landslides, and erosion. “Whenever it rains during this period, it mostly happens due to cloudbursts. Authorities and the public must remain extremely cautious,” he said.
Highlighting risks in flood-prone zones, Lotus warned against construction along rivers and flood channels, noting that houses in such areas are highly vulnerable. He urged authorities to enforce restrictions on construction in floodplains.
The meteorologist also condemned fake weather updates circulating on social media, calling them misleading and panic-inducing. He urged people to rely only on official weather bulletins, stressing that timely, authentic advisories can save lives.
Looking ahead, Lotus predicted more stable weather after September 4, though he cautioned that monsoon patterns can change suddenly. Expressing grief over recent cloudburst tragedies in Jammu division, he appealed to people to remain vigilant and cooperate with official advisories. (KINS)
