Menace of Chemically Ripened Fruits & Vegetables

It is no surprise that individuals purchasing fruits and vegetables to ensure nutritional fulfillment and counter vitamin deficiencies often face various ailments after consuming them. This is primarily because all is not well when it comes to the quality of these essential commodities. Numerous reports across print, social, and electronic media reveal that unscrupulous practices, such as the use of harmful chemicals for ripening and enhancing the appearance of fruits and vegetables, are rampant.

With markets flooded with bananas and other seasonal fruits, experts familiar with storage and sales techniques often disclose that calcium carbide, a dangerous chemical, is widely used for artificial ripening. This practice poses a significant threat to public health and hygiene.

Although the Union Territory is home to multiple units of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)—a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, tasked with regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food articles while ensuring food safety—malpractices such as artificial ripening and polishing of fruits persist unchecked, jeopardizing consumer health.

The vast number of vendors selling fruits and vegetables, including many unregistered or migrant workers earning their livelihood in the region, makes it challenging for civic bodies to monitor every seller effectively. This situation underscores the necessity of buying produce from credible vendors and thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables to mitigate risks, as pesticide contamination is also a growing concern.

The FSSAI has repeatedly instructed the Food Safety Departments of states and Union Territories to remain vigilant and take stringent action against those involved in such illegal practices, in line with the provisions of the FSS Act, 2006, and its accompanying rules and regulations. However, individual precautions remain critical for safeguarding health.

Therefore people must remain vigilant when purchasing fruits and vegetables, refusing to compromise on quality. Staying healthy should be a priority, and complacency on this issue is neither advisable nor acceptable.
