Locals ‘facilitate' militant escape during search operation

Bandipora, Dec 22: Due to open support of local population, militants managed to break the security cordon and flee from Parrey Mohalla Hajin area of 's Bandipora district on Thursday. Local protesters according to eyewitnesses freely used traditional ‘Kangri's' (Firepots) and attacked the security personnel on job.

Witnesses told CNS that after receiving the information about the presence of two militants in the area, Army personnel from 13 Rashtriya Rifles, SOG Bandipora and CRPF cordoned off Parrey Mohalla Hajin during the wee hours on Thursday.

Witnesses added that a large number of people hit to roads and confront the security forces who in retaliation fired tear-smoke shells to keep protesters at bay. “The agitated protesters attacked forces with stones and Kangri's while militants fired indiscriminately and fled from the spot.”

SP Bandipora Sheikh Zulifkar confirmed that militant fled from the spot. He said that in order to avoid collateral damage, Security Forces didn't retaliate.
