Srinagar, May 4 — Manoj Sinha on Monday inaugurated the prestigious All India Inter-University Wushu Championship at University of Kashmir, calling on young athletes to become ambassadors of the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan and inspire a drug-free society.
Addressing a large gathering of participants, officials, and sports enthusiasts, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized the transformative power of sports in shaping a healthier and more disciplined generation. He urged athletes to leverage their influence and motivate youth to steer away from substance abuse by embracing sports and creative pursuits.
Sports as a Tool for Social Change
Highlighting the administration’s vision, Sinha reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and culture across higher educational institutions. He stressed that equal opportunities must be provided to every student to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
“The championship is not just about competition—it reflects the spirit of unity, discipline, and national integration,” he said, adding that such events embody the essence of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat.
Promoting Unity Through Wushu
The championship, organized under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities, has attracted participation from over 150 universities and more than 1,000 athletes from across India. Featuring both men’s and women’s categories, the event highlights the growing inclusivity and popularity of Wushu at the university level.
Sinha described Wushu as a discipline that mirrors the resilience and determination of youth, adding that the tournament serves as a platform for cultural exchange where “rivals become friends and mentors shape the future heartbeat of India.”
Digital Awareness Campaign
In a unique appeal, the Lieutenant Governor encouraged athletes to create short videos on their mobile phones and share them on social media to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
“You are role models for the new generation. Your voice can inspire millions to choose the right path,” he said.
A Six-Day Sporting Extravaganza
The six-day championship will feature multiple bouts across various categories, showcasing agility, strength, and precision—the hallmarks of Wushu. The event is being organized by the Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, University of Kashmir.
Prominent dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan and senior administrative officials, were present at the inaugural ceremony, alongside coaches, athletes, and sports enthusiasts.
